History

Pride's Corner Congregational Church had its beginnings as a Sunday School, founded in 1909 at a meeting in John Clark's Store. Thirty-five people present voted to call it the Pride's Corner Union Bible School, and later took the name Pride's Corner Union Church Society. Union churches were a non-denominational movement of rural churches in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The first church building, on Elmwood Avenue, was dedicated on June 20, 1915

Being non-denominational, the church was served by part-time ministers of several denominations, including Nazarene, Baptist, Congregational, Unitarian, Advent Christian, Society of Friends and Lutheran. In 1924, the name was shortened to Pride's Corner Union Church.

On June 11, 1952, the church voted to join the Cumberland Association of Congregational Christian Churches of Maine, thus Ending its status as a Union Church

Between 1956 and 1958, a suitable location was sought to erect a new building. A site on Pride Street, owned by Fred I. Thomas was selected, and ground breaking took place in May 1958.

Much of the construction was done by church members. The labor of many people is hammered into the structure of the building. There is a special feeling of ownership in a building whose rafters are raised by the members. Since the old church on Elmwood Avenue was sold prior to completion of the new building, worship services were moved to the unfinished sanctuary on Easter Sunday, 1959. Dedication of the new church at 235 Pride Street was held April 10, 1960

A nursery school was established in 1959. It continues to serve one hundred children of area families, and has a well-deserved excellent reputation.

A need of more space brought about a building campaign in 1978, which culminated in the construction of Friendship Hall. This provides space for suppers, breakfast and larger meetings. In 1968, a three bedroom garrison style parsonage was built with the help of many of the parishioners. It is located about 5 minutes drive from the church.

Our church community includes residents from Westbrook, Portland, Windham, Cumberland and occasionally other surrounding towns. We currently have an active membership of 140, with an average church service attendance of 85. Congenial fellowship is experienced in after service coffee hours and working hard together on bean suppers and our highly acclaimed annual holiday fair.
